When it gets to be this time of the semester, nothing is more important than knowing how to relax and recuperate. the risk of not doing so is burning out and ultimately crashing.
How we choose to recharge and recover is crucially important. It is critical that we can know what best suits us, and not try to force ourselves into the thought process of “Well, this person loves to do this, so it should work for me, too.”
This brings up the idea of introverts and extroverts. The idea of introversion vs extroversion is one of the most basic, but also most complex. My premise in writing this is that most people have an understanding of where they fall on this spectrum. It seems as though we may be able to know which label best fits us, we rarely take this to further understanding and considering aspects of our personalities and lives.
To help begin the process, here are some common, different ways in which introverts and extroverts become re-energized.
Introverts:
- Spend time alone and don’t feel guilty about it
- Read a book
- Watch TV or a movie
- Go for a walk or hike
- Listen to music
Extroverts
- Play video, card, or board games with friends
- Hang out with some hall mates
- Exercise
- Get a group of friends together to go out to dinner
- Try out a new club or intramural
Most importantly, remember that this is a spectrum. It is not black and white; these are simple suggestions. Above all, use this as a reminder to respect each other and understand the different ways in which people like to spend their time. By acknowledging this, we allow ourselves to build better relationships.
