For many newcomers at Corban University, fears about homework, making friends or talking in class are dwarfed by another dreaded thing: the freshman 15. Between Aramark dessert at every meal, the frozen yogurt machine, and the late-night snacking that becomes a necessity for procrastinating crammers, many students fear gaining weight.
The Courthouse Athletic Club is offering a way to combat this fear. With multiple gyms in the Salem area, it’s offering membership deals to college students. Corban students can learn more on this Saturday, Sept. 3. From 3 to 6 p.m., the Battle Creek Courthouse Athletic Club (6250 Commercial St. SE), is hosting a free party for Corban students at Featured activities include Group Power and Zumba classes, dodge ball games and inflatables. Organizers will also serve pizza and show the University of Oregon football game.
To reach Corban students, the Courthouse teamed up with ASB Activities Officer Amy Drake. The business was looking for ways to attract more members, says Drake. She explains that Courthouse staff members are trying to accommodate college students by making membership cheaper than the regular $75-per-month rate.
“It’s free, it’s generous, and it’s getting into our community and having fun, while meeting new people,” says Drake.
At the party, Courthouse staff will explain this year’s special deals for college students. For only $10, Corban students can buy a September membership that includes four tans, a Dutch Bros. coffee, and access to all the gym activities. For only $199, Corban students can buy a yearlong membership to the nearby Lancaster Street Courthouse.
“It’s a great way for me to access classes and the pool for workouts,” says Corban senior Jen Hague, who plans on buying the yearlong membership. “I also love getting out into the community!”
