Like any newly engaged college girl, sophomore Shannon Young will be busy this semester balancing school, work, church, and, as of this weekend, planning her wedding with her new fiancé.
A normal 21-year-old would be concerned with herself, and with the myriad details of wedding colors and flower arrangements and bridesmaids’ dresses. But for Young, normal took on a new meaning four and a half years ago, when doctors diagnosed her with cancer.
For Cary Smith, the road to college has been a bumpy and winding one. A transfer student in 2008, Smith’s journey to Corban has taken him on several twists and turns along the way—from Pasco, Wash., his hometown; to Dallas, Texas; to India for a two-week stay; and eventually to Salem, Ore.
Fresh out of high school, Smith was interested in pursuing jazz performance. Thanks to a high school band director who “cared about students…[and] invested in [them],” Smith—named after the actor Cary Grant—got involved with band early on and started playing saxophone and clariphone.
For Lisa Morrish, camp is not a CCS credit, a church event, or a summer retreat. It’s home.
When members of the school’s music department were asked to honor a student who exemplified both talent and character, they chose senior Tim Saffeels.
Known for his positive attitude and versatility, he is an inspirational music student who is well-respected and admired by his professors.
