I don’t like New Year’s Resolutions. I don’t like them at all. That being said, let’s continue on this pathway of Un New Year’s Resolutions.
I do not appreciate New Year’s Resolutions for these reasons: People make them and then discard them later, people are undisciplined in reaching their goals, and people wait for New Year’s day to actually make new resolutions.
People often make New Year’s resolutions and discard them later because they do not make daily goals, weekly goals and monthly goals that will lead up to the yearly goal they have set forth. If individuals were to begin making these more frequent goals, I can guarantee that each individual would reach their goal at any given pace and become blissfully joyful when they do accomplish it.
This undisciplined manner could result from a person’s inability to fully rely on Jesus Christ to get them through the day, let alone the hour. When individuals have truly opened up their hearts, souls and minds to the Lord, and allow Him to help them on their life journey, they will feel His presence guiding them each step of the way.
In my freshman year of high school, Alan Woodruff, my cross country coach, said, “The way to reach goals is through the three D’s: dedication, desire, and discipline.”
If individuals were to take the three D’s, as mentioned, and were to treat every task, I.e. loving others, working hard in school or work, swim practice, Etc. as worship unto the Lord, this would take them toward the goals the Lord has brought before their eyes. When individuals state they must wait until New Year’s Day to make resolutions, it is like saying that they are going to wait for God to forgive them of their sins, or wait to be made new only on a particular day.
As Matthew Dickerson once said in chapel: “Our worth initially came because God made us. You are not a cosmic accident … you are the loved creation of a good and loving God who made you with a purpose.”
Because God already loved us, we don’t have to wait to be made new, just as we don’t have to wait for the new year to make new resolutions. God wants to see us glorify him in all that we do, while making him the essence of our life and responding with positivity to whatever he throws at us.
“Break free from the poisonous victim mentality and embrace the truth of your greatness.” Said author Steve Maraboli. “You were not meant for a mundane or mediocre life!”
Resolutions are not reached by infinite chance or by simply waiting, but by allowing God to work with you on your resolutions. Whatever the Lord tells you to do, take action. Whatever goal comes to mind, ignite the flame and do not wait. Be made new now.
