With the arrival of fall came the arrival of the cliché flavor of Pumpkin Spice which has become the spokesman flavor of autumn. Sitting on the beige couch in Common Grounds you can hear the echo of the barista’s voice summoning students’ to quickly grab their Pumpkin Spice Lattes as they rush to class. As fall rounded the corner this famous autumn drink seemed to be the only thing students were ordering. Having never hopped on this bandwagon I decided to finally try this latte for myself.
I found myself surprisingly disappointed by the flavors dancing, or more like sleeping, in my mouth. Instead of a powerful blend of spices and flavors it tasted more like a diluted chai tea. I couldn’t even taste the coffee, which on the plus side means I wouldn’t suffer from coffee breath. It was all the caffeine minus all flavors.
While I hoped to experience a celebration of vibrant autumn flavors I found myself experiencing a rather dismal blend of warm creamy froth and mediocre autumn spices. If you want to spice up your life I’d stick with dirty chai or even caramel apple cider, at least you can taste their distinct flavors with every sip. This is a froufrou drink of the coffee world I could live without.
Whose idea was it anyway to take something you’re supposed to chew and put it in liquid form? You’re supposed to eat pumpkin pie, not drink it. After drinking just one tall Pumpkin Spice Latte I felt like I’d just devoured a whole Thanksgiving Day meal. Coffee should not be filling; it’s a liquid, not a meal. I think if you really want to drink something that taste like pumpkin pie you should just stick a pie in the blender, nuke it, throw in some coffee beans and there you go… you’ve got a homemade pumpkin spice latte. Sounds to die for, right?
This coffee drink is certainly masked in popularity and nostalgia. Yet it doesn’t live up to its name or expectations. This puffed up coffee drink didn’t have a latte to offer.
