As a loyal resident of Prewitt, I take pride in where I live. To me, it is in the ideal location on campus: it’s far enough away from all the festivities to be semi-peaceful, yet close enough so I can easily participate in the exciting activities.
However, the very best part about my location is that on my way to and from class, I have the opportunity to burn a significant amount of Aramark calories. Now who could argue with these perks? None of the people from Prewitt, that’s for sure.
Because I am a curious person, I automatically wonder how many calories I really do burn in one day. According to RunningWorld.com, to find out how many calories I burn walking 1 mile at a steady speed of 3 to 4 mph, I multiply .53 by my weight.
Hypothetically speaking, let’s say I weigh about 150 pounds. That means for every mile I walk, I burn 79.5 calories. If you ask me, that’s pretty exciting.
Living in PVG, I think I walk a bit farther to my classes than some of my fellow dorm friends – especially when I forget my homework and have to walk (or, in some cases, run) all the way back to get it. I’d say, on a good day, I walk 1.5 to 2 miles. That’s a grand total of up to 159 calories a day from simply going to class! Who knew that my tuition included such a great gym class here on the hills at Corban?
Thankfully, for me, walking the hills first thing in the morning is never a problem because it’s all downhill to class. But, at the end of the day, it can sure be a drag to climb back up. Even as I sit here writing, I see people struggling up the hill to the Academic Center. Let’s face it: the hills on campus can be a difficulty on top of an already tough day — especially when you forget your homework and have 3 minutes to get to class.
But let’s play the thankful game. Not only do we get a free aerobic class from all the walking, but Corban threw in a weights class as well! Who can’t be thankful for stronger calves?
So, you don’t have to fear the freshman 15, the sophomore 20, or the junior 30. You live on a campus that is just asking you to burn calories. If you live in Davidson, make friends with the townhouse people; if you live in Aagard, make friends with those in PVG. When it’s time to go visiting, walk there.
