It’s just a single piece of paper. A paper in which 64 teams are listed and people everywhere try and decide which team will win it all. Brackets are a March Madness normality. Whenever this time of year comes around the competition can be felt in the air. Whose bracket will be the best of them all? Who chose the Number one seed to take the championship home, or will it be an underdog that no one has ever heard of?
Freshman Brian Abbey made a bracket last year. “I thought it was going to be an easy tournament when it started. Then Butler began their run, and I had to throw my bracket into the trash in utter shame,” He said. When a bracket goes bad many people burn it out of embarrassment.
What is it that drives guys to get together in groups for March Madness, and see who can construct the best bracket? What drives them to sit in front of the television for hours pleading with the team they have chosen to win?
“Mike Miller who ran the bracket system for the facility and the math department handed one out to me in class.” Senior Evan Hedlund said. “It seemed like a fun thing that everyone was doing in the class. If I won it would be fun to have the glory, but if I didn’t it was still an ok situation.”
Davidson is one of the dorms running a bracket tournament this year, and so far the brackets have not gone people’s way.
“My bracket looked solid at the start. Until the round of 16 started, and all the teams that were supposed to lose won. It was still fun to see all the underdog teams win.” Junior Derek Johnson had to say on the ups and downs of the tournament and the effects it can have on one’s bracket.
With the Final Four about to take place followed by the Championship game those whose brackets have survived will be watching the televisions intently. Crossing their fingers wishing their team will get them the reputation of best bracket builder.
The NCAA National Championship will be played on Monday night, April 4th, at 9:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. local time) on CBS between Butler and UConn. Those who have chosen either of those teams will be watching with fingers crossed to claim that top prize. It will be viewable in the coffee shop, Davidson and Aramark during that time.
