Comparing Obama and Romney: The ‘Big’ Issues

        MITT ROMNEY, republican candidate

On Abortion:

 Romney only supports abortion in cases of incest, rape or to protect the life of the mother. Although not looking to ban abortion, he is seeking to protect the sanctity of life by eliminating “federal funding to abortion advocates like Planned Parenthood.” Romney has also said, “It is long past time for the Supreme Court to return the issue of abortion back to the states, by overturning Roe v. Wade.”

On Energy/Environment:

Romney wants to see increased domestic oil, natural- gas, and nuclear-power production. He is a limited supporter of clean/alternative energy. Romney has also shown support for finishing the Keystone XL oil pipeline to Canada. Romney also wants to lessen or “streamline” EPA regulations on natural-gas production.

On Immigration:

Romney wants to see more incentives to bring more legal residents and foreign workers into the United States. However, Romney also has supported an aggressive stance to make sure employers are not hiring illegal immigrants knowingly. Also supports tougher border defenses.

On Foreign Policy:

Romney agrees with President Obama in that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons and he is willing to use military force as well. Romney also believes the United States should also give more support to Israel and help strengthen their military. He also thinks the U.S should arm Syrian rebels who are fighting against  the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.

On Afghanistan:

Romney has criticized President Obama’s handling of the war in Afghanistan. He has said that the President has ignored his generals and field commanders who asked for a different departure date for the troops. Also believes the Afghan government should handle its own security.

On Abortion:

President Obama’s policy on abortion has not changed. He supports Roe vs. Wade, which he believes protects women’s health and thinks the “government should not intrude on private family matters.” Also, President Obama has said, “abortion should be safe, legal, and rare. I think that it’s something that all of us should recognize is a difficult, sometimes — oftentimes tragic situation that families are wrestling with.”

On Energy/Environment:

President Obama has been a long supporter of green/alternative energy, but also has supported additional domestic fuel production. Has also introduced many regulations, especially with the EPA. Mainly the President seeks to lessen America’s reliance on foreign energy.

On Immigration:

 President Obama’s stance on immigration focused on cracking down on “criminal aliens.” At the same time, the President has been cutting back on deportations of illegal immigrants without criminal records. President Obama is also cracking down on companies that hire and or exploit illegal immigrants.

On Foreign Policy:

President Obama does not think Iran should have nuclear weapons and is open to all options, including military strikes to prevent them from obtaining them. He has been accused of not fully supporting Israel when he said “the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps…” Sought to find a diplomatic solution in Syria, but has recently ordered aid be sent to the rebels.

On Afghanistan:

Although President Obama originally increased the number of troops in Afghanistan to around 100,000,  he has started gradually withdrawing them as of last year. President Obama has set the year 2014  as a deadline for coalition and U.S. troops to be out of the country. The U.S troops will take on a training and support role after that time to ensure the Afghan government will be able to handle its own defenses.
