Heather Simpson is a survivor. She fought for weeks and came out the winner. The winner of last semester’s Survivor games, that is.
The club was started by freshman Johnathan Partridge, known as JP, and senior Tony Roberts after the two had been playing a board game based on the CBS show, Survivor.
“We thought, we should definitely play this over a long span of time, or just make our own game,” Roberts said.
Here’s how it works: students try out, and get divided into two teams. Two times a week, the teams compete in a challenge. The losing team has a member voted off until only three participants remain. A panel of judges then chooses a winner who receives $50. The entire competition is filmed and put on YouTube.
“It’s so much fun,” Partridge said, “You’re playing emotionally because your life in the game depends on winning.”
While it is competitive, the club is designed primarily to be a way for Corban students to build community and take a break from schoolwork.
“The whole process was really fun,” Simpson said, “It gave me an opportunity to have a break.”
Tryouts for this semester’s Survivor Corban are being held until Friday, February 22, 2013. If you would like to be involved, you can join the Survivor Corban group on Facebook and express your interest, or email Partridge at johnathanpartridge@corban.edu.
“Join it. Right now,” Simpson said.
Survivor Corban will meet for 15-30 minutes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Times will be determined after tryouts, according to the participants’ schedules.
