Autumn is upon us. The leaves are falling so fast that the groundskeepers can barely keep up with the amount descending from their lofty heights.
It is in this season that Campus Recreation seeks to provide some indoor intramurals.
Recently they hosted a two day Hoop for Hope 3 on 3 basketball tournament in the gym.
Previously the tournament lasted only a single day, however, this year teams would face off in a double elimination format. But this wasn’t the only change, to promote giving back to the community each team member was required to bring a canned good to donate to the Marion Polk Food Share.
Hoops for Hope consisted of both a competitive and a recreational league. A total of nine teams (six competitive and three recreational) would battle it out.
Recreational
Three teams competed in the double elimination format.
The first game consisted of a battle between Team Patterson, captained by Daniel Patterson, and Raising the Bar, captained by Nicole Luce.
Team Patterson took the game in this tournament opener, though, Luce’s team got a second chance to prove themselves due to the new double elimination format.
In the second round, Patterson’s team played against The Mags, captained by Matt Shaw. Shaw’s team knocked Patterson’s into the second round elimination forcing them to have a rematch with their original opponent.
In a comeback Luce’s team beat Patterson’s and moved on to the championship with The Mags.
The final game was close, but The Mags held off Raising the Bar and claimed the Fall 2013 Hoop for Hope Recreational Championship.
Competitive
The Competitive Bracket for the Hoop for Hope tournament was large enough to merit holding the tournament over a period of two days. Six teams battled each other in the double elimination format to see who would walk away the best.
On the first day, teams Tyce’s Tantrum, Soup-a-Stars, Fed-Ex Sign Here, and UPS We Deliver started off on the right foot by gaining wins and making it further into the bracket. However, teams Big Red! Badgers, and the Seattle Super Sonics didn’t make the cut.
One of the first games on day two was a confrontation between delivery services: UPS We Deliver, captained by Marcus Nash, and Fed-Ex Sign Here, captained by Dawson Nofziger. Nash’s team proved to be better at delivering a winning game.
In the other bracket, Tyce’s Tantrum, captained by Hayden Herring, played against Aaron Kinnes’ Soup-a-Stars. Herring’s team won the match leaves Kinnes’ to play against Fed-Ex Sign Here. Soup-a-Stars would still be in contention for a title because of the double elimination format.
In the battle between delivery service and edible stars, Kinnes’ team won. Soup-a-Stars faced off with Herring’s team again.
To finish off the Hoop for Hope tournament, the Soup-a-Stars pulled even with Tyce’s Tantrum by handing them their first defeat. Though, because Herring’s team had a winning streak in the double elimination tournament, they had one more shot at winning the championship in a second rematch against Kinnes’ team.
After the final match Tyce’s Tantrum secured their position at the top of the mountain and became the Fall 2013 Hoop for Hope Competitive champions.
