Competing against 16 other U.S. Christian colleges and universities in October, Corban University journalism students won eight awards for writing, photography and design.
The students’ winning pieces originally ran in the Hilltop News, Corban’s student newspaper, and the yearbook, during the 2009-10 school year. Winners were selected by professional journalists working within the Baptist Press, the publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Conference. The Baptist Press presented the awards at the Excellence in Journalism Collegiate Convention, held in Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 7-9.
Corban journalists won three first place, one second place and three third place awards.
Last year’s Hilltop News editor-in-chief Megan Wozniak took three awards: first place for a center-spread design featuring track athlete David Anderson and golfer Joey Duwe, first place for front-page design, and third place for an article about academic cheating entitled “Faking the Grade.”
Staff writer Bill DeHaven won first place for a yearbook story about the spring play Hamlet, while staff writer Kristin Zanon won third place for a yearbook story about spring break missions.
Sports writer and photographer Tanner Froese won first place for his pictorial color photo of Corban’s flag football team. Photographer Jake Bowdoin won third place for his pictorial color photo of the university’s clock tower.
The Hilltop News won third place in the overall competition with six similar-size schools.
